Tema 28: level crossings and moving bridges in the DGT exam

A train cannot dodge you: here the barrier, the signal and the order of actions if you stall rule.

Reviewed on 6 October 2026 · sources: BOE and DGT

The exam asks what you do at a level crossing (paso a nivel) or a moving bridge: when you must not enter and what to do if you stall.

  • You do not enter with the barrier down or moving, or with the signal at stop. Barrier and signal are independent bans.
  • With no barrier or signal, you check that no train is coming; this applies to every road user, pedestrians too.
  • If you stall, the first thing is to get the occupants out and clear the track. If you cannot, you warn at once, by any means. The same applies on a moving bridge.
  • You do not overtake at level crossings or near them.

Watch out: do not time it fine, because a moving barrier already forbids entry.

Key rules of topic 28

Crossing a paso a nivel (level crossing)

You do not enter a level crossing with the barrier down or moving, or with the signal at stop.

  • Barrier and signal are independent bans, and apply even with no approach beacons.
  • With no barrier or signal, you check that no train is coming; this applies to every road user, pedestrians too.
  • If it is closed, you stop behind the vehicle ahead, in your own carril (lane).

Stopped on the crossing

If you are stuck on a paso a nivel (level crossing), the first thing is to get the occupants out and clear the track.

  • If you cannot, you warn at once, by any means, the train drivers and the road drivers approaching.
  • It is a sequence: clear first, then warn, because clearing usually prevents the crash.
  • The same applies on a moving bridge.

Rails, adelantamiento (overtaking) and moving bridge

A rail vehicle has right of way over other road users, because it cannot swerve or brake like a car.

  • You do not overtake at pasos a nivel (level crossings) or near them, not even two-wheelers.
  • Sign P-5 «moving bridge» warns of a section that may lift or swing and cut the traffic.
