The 38 topics of the Spanish B-licence theory exam
The full theory syllabus, grouped by block. Each topic summarises the rules the exam asks about, with the article they come from.
Basics, licences and road users
- Topic 1Basic concepts and traffic factors
Vocabulary first: the exam asks what each thing is. Learn the Annex I definitions in the pairs that get confused. - Topic 2Licences and the points system
Who may drive, how many points they hold and what papers the vehicle needs. These are stand-alone figures: learn each with its time limit. - Topic 3Pedestrians, cyclists and animals: how to behave around them
The rule is that the driver has priority, and the exceptions are the examinable part. Learn them as a list: there are few and they always come up. - Topic 4Direction of travel and use of lanes and hard shoulders
You drive on the right, and which lane you may use depends on whether you are in town or outside it. That split decides nearly every question here.
The vehicle and the trip
- Topic 5Vehicle requirements: registration, MOT and insurance
Four vehicle procedures: authorise it, inspect it, insure it and de-register it. Each has a figure the exam asks about. - Topic 6Plates, badges and documents
Which papers the vehicle carries and when they stop being valid. - Topic 7Loads, trailers and carrying passengers
Figures for size, load and people. Learn each figure with its vehicle: what holds for a lorry does not for a motorbike. - Topic 8The journey: preparation and required equipment
What a car must carry: three things and not much else. Tell the car kit from the bus kit and the motorcycle kit.
Signs and signals
- Topic 9Signage: what it is, obeying it, and which sign wins
Before learning what each sign means, learn which one wins. When two signs disagree, the exam asks you about the order of precedence. - Topic 10Vertical road signs: warning, regulatory and information
The biggest tema in the exam. Three families, one shape each: triangle warns, circle orders, square informs. Learn the family first, the pictogram second. - Topic 11Road markings
Paint on the road ranks last in precedence, yet it decides most photo questions. White is the default; yellow bans stopping or parking. - Topic 12Traffic lights
Four kinds of light and a handful of colours. The law says 'amarilla', not 'amber', and green does not excuse blocking the junction. - Topic 13Temporary signage, delineation and vehicle restraint systems
The signage that changes with the traffic. It ranks second in precedence, ahead of traffic lights, and temporarily overrides the fixed signs. - Topic 14Signing works and maintenance stretches
What changes when the road is under works: who signs it, in what colour, and why works staff can stop you though they are not officers.
Speed and mechanics
- Topic 15Speed
The answer depends on three variables at once: road type, vehicle category and whether you tow. Memorising one number is the fastest way to fail. - Topic 16The vehicle controls
Controls must be operable without taking your attention off the road, and the horn has a limited use: warning of danger, not venting about traffic. - Topic 17Visibility, glass and mirrors
The windscreen must not deceive the eye or hide a red light, and mirrors are mandatory, not optional. - Topic 18Lighting and optical signalling
Four rules separate correct light use: what lights to carry, when to switch them on, how not to dazzle, and what to do if you stop at night. - Topic 19Tyres and suspension
Tyre tread has a legal minimum, and when chains are needed, they go on the driving wheel, not whichever one you prefer. - Topic 20Brakes, steering and transmission
Every vehicle carries three distinct brakes, not one, and the steering must respond with ease, speed and safety. - Topic 21Maintenance, breakdowns and the engine
The engine cannot sound or pollute above the limit, and a breakdown blocking the carriageway must be signalled and cleared as soon as possible. - Topic 22Accessories, equipment and ADAS
Neither a radar inhibitor nor headphones at the wheel are innocent 'accessories', and ADAS helps you drive, it does not drive for you.
Manoeuvres and priority
- Topic 23Overtaking
Four questions in thirty are manoeuvres, and overtaking is the commonest. You overtake on the left; the exceptions are the exam. - Topic 24Turning, U-turns and reversing
Three manoeuvres with one shared duty: signal in advance and satisfy yourself you create no danger. The U-turn bans are the examinable part. - Topic 25Stopping and parking
This whole tema turns on one definition: a parada is under two minutes without leaving the car. Everything else is parking. - Topic 26Joining traffic and lateral movements
Whoever joins always yields. Whoever is already moving helps where they can. Two different duties the exam likes to mix up. - Topic 27Junctions and right of way
You look at the signage first. Only if there is none does priority-from-the-right apply, and even then with four listed exceptions. - Topic 28Level crossings and moving bridges
A train cannot dodge you: here the barrier, the signal and the order of actions if you stall rule. - Topic 29Signals and orders from traffic officers
First in the order of precedence. Six gestures, and the exam asks what they make you do, not what they are called. - Topic 30E-scooters, special vehicles and the environment
Three loose blocks: the e-scooter, special vehicles and low-emission zones. Each has its own closed list. - Topic 31Motorways and dual carriageways
Fast roads have their own figures (120, 100, 90 and minimum 60), their own bans and their own way of joining and leaving.
Safety, fatigue and first aid
- Topic 32Alcohol and drugs at the wheel
Alcohol has figures (0.25 and 0.15) and test rules; drugs have a saliva rule. The rest is understanding what alcohol does to you. - Topic 33Fatigue, sleep, distraction and medication
Three dangers: distraction, sleep and the phone. Learn the manual's lists and the law's two bans. - Topic 34Passive safety: belts, airbags and child seats
Four devices that protect you once the crash happens: belt, child seat, airbag and headrest. Each has a condition the exam asks about. - Topic 35Night driving and poor visibility
At night you see less, are seen less and are more tired. Learn what to do with your lights and which mistakes the eye makes. - Topic 36Rain, fog, snow and tunnels
Bad weather and tunnels change three things: which lights you use, how fast you go and how far you need to stop. - Topic 37The crash: the duty to assist and the PAS routine
The law obliges you to assist. The method for doing it — protect, alert, help — is not in the law: it is DGT doctrine, and it is what the exam asks. - Topic 38Assisting: basic first aid
First aid and the duty to assist after a crash.
