What it means
«Indica la proximidad del lugar en que la calzada por la que se circula pierde su prioridad respecto a otra calzada.» RD 465/2025, Annex I of the RGC (BOE-A-2025-12199), Spanish original.
It announces that your carriageway, which had priority until now, loses it at the place ahead. It cancels the priority road at that exact point (RGC art. 56.4).
Where you meet it
You see it on the road that had priority until now, before the point where it loses it. It belongs to the priority class of signs, not to the end-of-prohibitions class: it lifts no prohibition.
What you must do
Once past the sign, at the next junction with no other sign, the general priority rules apply and not the one you had before (RGC art. 145.2.a). Get ready to give way if the general rule requires it.
Details that count
A priority sign is a regulation sign: it imposes a rule, unlike the triangle, which only flags a risk that is hard to see in time (RGC arts. 144 to 146). And the priority being lost is only that of this carriageway against the other, at that point: the sign lifts no prohibition. R-3 and R-4 form a pair: the first states your carriageway's priority and the second announces the place where it is lost. From R-4 on, with no further signing, the general priority rules apply, among them priority to the right as a fallback rule (RGC arts. 56.4, 57.1 and 145.2.a).
What it is confused with
It is confused with R-3, «Priority road»: they are twins with an opposite drawing. R-3 says you have priority; R-4 that you are about to lose it. Nor is it an «end of prohibitions» sign, which is R-500 and lifts specific prohibitions, not priority.
