Tema 24: turning, U-turns and reversing in the DGT exam

Three manoeuvres with one shared duty: signal in advance and satisfy yourself you create no danger. The U-turn bans are the examinable part.

This tema asks how you turn, where U-turns are banned and when reversing is allowed.

  • To turn right you hug the right edge; to turn left, the left edge if the road is one-way.
  • Every manoeuvre is signalled in advance and requires you to check you create no danger. You must refrain from turning left if you do not have enough visibility.
  • U-turns are banned at level crossings, in tunnels and underpasses. Also on motorways (autopistas) and dual carriageways (autovías), except at designated places.
  • Reversing is allowed only when you cannot go forward or turn, and for the shortest distance possible. As part of another manoeuvre, the distance may not exceed 15 metres.
  • Reversing is banned on motorways and dual carriageways.

Watch out: "no overtaking" implies "no U-turn".

Positioning to turn

To turn right you hug the right edge; to turn left, the left edge if the road is one-way.

  • On a two-way road you position beside the centre line, without crossing into the other side.

No visibility, no turn

You must refrain from turning left if you do not have enough visibility.

  • Every manoeuvre is signalled in advance and requires you to check you create no danger.
  • Changing lane, you respect the priority of whoever is already in the lane you will take.

Where no U-turn

U-turns are banned at level crossings, in tunnels and underpasses, on stretches with the tunnel sign, and on motorways except at designated places.

  • Also on every stretch where overtaking is banned, unless expressly authorised.
  • And in any situation that stops you checking that you create no danger.

The fifteen metres

Reversing is allowed only when you cannot go forward or turn, and for the shortest distance possible.

  • As part of stopping, parking or joining traffic, the distance may not exceed 15 metres.
  • And it may never cross a junction.

Reversing on a motorway

Reversing is banned on motorways and dual carriageways.

  • If it amounts to driving against the established direction, it is a very serious offence.
  • Missed your exit: carry on to the next one. There is no exception.

How to do it

Reversing is done slowly, after signalling and checking for danger, even getting out or being guided by another person.

  • If you cannot be sure, you abandon the manoeuvre.
