This guide is step 3 of applying without a driving school.

How much is the DGT theory test fee?

For licence tests (moped, motorcycle, car, lorry or bus) the DGT charges fee 2.1, €94.05. The same page lists other fees that are not for category B:

FeeWhat it is forAmount
2.1Tests to obtain a licence, including B€94.05
2.2LCM and LVA licences€44.58
2.3Category A for holders of A2 for over two years, or recovering a licence after losing its validity€28.87

Source: DGT, procedure cost. The fee does not include the medical report or driving-school lessons.

Is fee 2.3 for the category B test?

No. Fee 2.3 costs €28.87, but it is for category A when you have held A2 for over two years, or for recovering a licence after losing its validity. The application form confirms it: licences use 2.1 (category A uses 2.3). Source: DGT application form.

How many attempts does the fee cover?

Two. If you fail twice, in the same test or in different tests, you submit a new application and pay a new fee. One theory fail plus one practical fail also uses both. Sources: DGT, sittings and General Driver Regulations, article 51.2.

Not turning up also uses a sitting. For a properly justified force-majeure reason you can ask for the test notification to be cancelled. Source: DGT, cancelling a test notification.

How do I pay the DGT fee?

  1. Online, in the DGT fee payment application, with a digital certificate, Cl@ve PIN or Cl@ve permanente. If you pay by bank debit, the account holder must match the certificate or Cl@ve holder.
  2. In the miDGT app, under «Mis trámites» then «Tasas», by card, Bizum or bank debit.
  3. At a traffic office, when you do the procedure, by debit or credit card. Cash is not accepted.
  4. At a bank, without a certificate or Cl@ve: generate form 791 on the DGT website, pay at a participating bank and hand the «Ejemplar para la Administración» copy in at the traffic office. Each form 791 can be used once.

Where do I find the fee number?

On the last page of the receipt you get when paying online. It has 12 digits, with the payment date and amount. Online procedures ask for it. If you buy several, check you apply one of the right type. Fees bought online can be used at any traffic office. Source: DGT, paying fees.

What about an old, unused or duplicate fee?

  • To check whether it was used: in the fee application, «Consultar Pedidos» shows whether it has been applied. You need a certificate, electronic ID or Cl@ve.
  • If you paid it in an earlier year: you can update it under «Actualizar Tasas», paying only the price increase.
  • If you paid too much or twice: you can request a refund.

Does the fee expire after six months?

The regulation says that, within one file, no more than six months should pass between sittings, except for illness or other justified reasons. It is a gap between tests. Source: article 51.2. For an unused fee, check its status as described above.

Other useful periods: a passed theory test stays valid for two years from the following day (article 53.1), and the medical report gives you 90 days to apply (DGT, requirements).

The full budget, with medical report and driving school, is in driving licence costs in Spain. Next step: submit your application or book an appointment.
