This guide is step 4 of applying without a driving school.

Can I apply for the test without an appointment?

Yes, online. The independent test application can be filed in the DGT electronic register with an electronic ID card, a digital certificate or Cl@ve credentials. Pay the fee first and attach the form, medical report and receipt. Source: DGT, independent test application.

If you have neither Cl@ve nor a certificate, the routes are an office appointment or an authorised representative who has those credentials.

How do I book a DGT appointment?

  1. Open the DGT appointment service, use the miDGT app or call 060.
  2. Choose the office and the service area for your procedure.
  3. Pick the procedure, day and time from the free slots.
  4. Enter your details and, if someone goes for you, your representative’s. Leave an email and phone number.
  5. Download the confirmation; it is also emailed to you.

The DGT says it tries to give you an appointment as soon as possible and at least within the fifteen days after your request. Appointments are on weekday mornings; some large offices also open on Thursday afternoons. Source: DGT, office appointments.

What can I do when there are no appointments?

  1. Apply online if you have Cl@ve, a certificate or an electronic ID card: no appointment needed.
  2. Try the other channels: the website, the miDGT app and 060 all book the same appointments.
  3. Look at other offices: you choose the office when booking, and the DGT accepts test applications at any traffic office (in-person application).
  4. Do not book under another service area: the DGT warns that if your area has no slots you cannot book in a different one, because each procedure is only handled in its own area.

How much does calling 060 cost?

Booking is free. The 060 call costs whatever your operator charges; some bill it as a short number outside flat-rate plans. From abroad, call +34 902 887 060. The automated service runs 24 hours; an agent answers Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 18:00, except national holidays. Source: DGT, office appointments.

What do I bring to the appointment?

Your Spanish ID card or another official identity document, such as your passport, NIE or residence permit, to show at the desk. Source: DGT, office appointments.

To file your test application, also bring the signed form, the medical report and the paid fee or a card to pay there. The identity and residence documents the DGT asks for in your case are in the foreign residents guide. Source: DGT, in-person application.

When you arrive, take a number from the kiosks to be assigned a desk. If you miss your turn, you may not be seen.

Can someone else go for me?

Yes. The booking names both the applicant and the representative. The representative must be authorised in the DGT powers-of-attorney register or bring the signed «Otorgamiento de representación» form. Source: DGT, office appointments.

Can anyone go without an appointment?

Yes. People aged 65 or over can go without one, at the times each office sets, for their own procedures. So can some people with reduced mobility after visiting the assessment centre. Source: DGT, office appointments.

Remember: an office appointment is not your test date. The traffic office sets that date later, at your request, and it comes with your test notification. Source: General Driver Regulations, article 51.1. What to expect then: exam day.
